Countdown to World Hepatitis Day 2026

“Let’s Break It Down” is the official theme for World Hepatitis Day 2026, introduced by the World Health OrganizationOver the next 28 days, we invite you to join us as we explore what hepatitis is, why it matters, how it spreads, who should be tested, the importance of vaccination and early detection, and the actions each of us can take to help move Pakistan towards a Hepatitis-Free future.

Every year on July 28, the world observes World Hepatitis Day under the leadership of the World Health Organization to raise awareness about viral hepatitis and encourage prevention, early diagnosis, and access to treatment. It serves as a global reminder that millions of people are living with hepatitis, many without knowing they are infected.

For Pakistan, this day carries special significance. The country continues to face one of the world’s highest burdens of hepatitis C. Because hepatitis often has no symptoms in its early stages, many people remain unaware they are infected until serious liver damage has already occurred. Increasing awareness and encouraging early testing can help change that.

This educational countdown is inspired by Prof. Dr. Saeed Akhtar’s long-standing vision for a Hepatitis-Free Pakistan. For more than a decade, he has advocated for hepatitis elimination through public awareness, expanded screening, early diagnosis, improved access to treatment, and stronger national action. His vision reminds us that eliminating hepatitis is not only a healthcare goal—it is an investment in the health and future of generations to come.
