One Goal: A Hepatitis-Free Pakistan

A Decade of Commitment to Hepatitis Elimination

Hepatitis elimination has been a central focus of Prof. Dr. Saeed Akhtar’s work for more than a decade. He has consistently advocated for hepatitis C elimination in Pakistan, emphasizing the urgent need for national action, expanded screening, early diagnosis, and equitable access to treatment.

Dr. Saeed believes that reducing the burden of hepatitis is one of Pakistan’s greatest public health opportunities. Every person diagnosed early and linked to treatment represents not only a life improved, but also a step toward protecting future generations from preventable liver disease.

“If we can eradicate Hepatitis C, it will be one of the greatest services to Pakistan and to humanity.”
— Prof. Dr. Saeed Akhtar

Countdown to World Hepatitis Day 2026

This year, the World Health Organization has announced “Let’s Break It Down” as the official theme for World Hepatitis Day 2026—a call to make hepatitis information clear, understandable, and accessible for everyone.

Inspired by this global theme and Prof. Dr. Saeed Akhtar’s long-standing vision for a Hepatitis-Free Pakistan, we are launching a 28-day Countdown to World Hepatitis Day beginning July 1.

Each day, we will explore one important topic—from understanding hepatitis B and C, to prevention, testing, treatment, vaccination, and the steps every individual and community can take to help reduce the burden of hepatitis in Pakistan.

Together, let’s break down hepatitis—one topic, one conversation, and one day at a time.
