PKI: Pioneering Kidney Care Since 2004
Established in April 2004, the Pakistan Kidney Institute (PKI) was founded by Professor Saeed Akhter and a group of esteemed physicians and surgeons, all trained in the USA and the UK. Driven by a deep sense of moral responsibility and social commitment, this team of highly skilled doctors returned to their homeland with the mission of establishing a world-class kidney treatment facility aimed at providing accessible healthcare to underserved and impoverished communities.
Since its inception, PKI has not only become a symbol of hope and health but also a beacon of compassion and service. Our clinic’s foundation was built on the premise of providing free medical care to the poverty-stricken population, ensuring that those who needed life-saving kidney treatments, regardless of their financial background, could receive them.

A Decade of Impact: 2004-2024
Over the past two decades, PKI has successfully treated over 190,000 patients, offering a comprehensive range of services from outpatient consultations to complex surgeries such as kidney transplants and cancer treatments. In addition to providing direct medical care, PKI has played a pivotal role in training and mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals. Our institution has produced more than 20 urologists and nephrologists, further expanding the impact of our mission.
A Commitment to Service Beyond Borders
Our commitment to service extends far beyond our own borders. PKI has actively participated in disaster relief efforts in times of national and international crises. From the devastating 2005 earthquake in Pakistan to the 2022 floods, PKI has been at the forefront of rescue and relief operations, providing essential medical care to those in dire need. Moreover, our efforts have reached beyond our country’s borders, with PKI contributing to rescue missions in Indonesia following the 2006 tsunami, as well as earthquake relief efforts in Haiti and Türkiye in 2022.
Research and Global Contributions
In line with our mission to advance medical knowledge and foster innovation, PKI has contributed significantly to the global medical community. Our researchers have published more than 100 papers in both local and international journals. These studies have been presented at prestigious national and international conferences in locations including Australia, the UK, the USA, and Singapore, positioning PKI as a leader in the field of kidney care.

Our efforts involved coordinating with teams to distribute essential supplies, providing first aid and basic medical assistance to the injured, and assisting in the evacuation of individuals from hazardous areas. This hands-on experience honed our skills in crisis management, logistics under pressure, and empathetic communication, all while working tirelessly to ensure the safety and dignity of affected populations during their most vulnerable moments.

A DREAM CAME TRUE
This dream later transforms into Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) a state-of- The-art institute aimed at treating kidney and liver diseases. PKL I was completed in record time of 3 years but became the victim of jealously and conspiracy where Prof. Saeed Akhter felt that his vision and mission will be compromised. He thus decided to resign from his brain child and walked away because he does not compromise on principle.

Jinnah Medical Complex
Human needs never end. Even with PKI and PKLI delivering their best, still another setup is needed to coup-up with ever increasing patient load. This dream is going to be realized in form of JINNAH MEDICAL COMPLEX & RESEARCH CENTER (JMC&RC) which will be 1000 beds tertiary/quaternary care teaching hospital with its own University and research complex in Islamabad. Besides taking the full responsibility of construction and supporting initial operations, the federal government has allocated 600 kanal of land in H 16 sector in the heart of Islamabad along with 200 kanals of adjacent commercial land, which will be a source of revenue for future sustainability of the complex.
