At the inaugural International Scientific Symposium 2026 of Pakistan Kidney & Liver Institute (PKLI), Prof. Dr. Saeed Akhter reflected on a historic milestone in Pakistan’s medical advancement.
Over four days of pre-symposium workshops, leading international physicians and surgeons collaborated with PKLI teams, conducting advanced procedures and academic training. These sessions marked a significant step forward in strengthening clinical capacity and institutional growth.
Among the remarkable achievements highlighted:
Pakistan’s first robotic liver resection for cancer
Robotic removal of pancreatic tumors
A groundbreaking domino liver transplant, where a mother donated a portion of her liver to a child with a metabolic disorder, and that child’s liver segment was successfully transplanted into another child with a different metabolic condition
All three patients recovered successfully, with dramatic clinical improvement — including normalization of cholesterol levels that had previously reached nearly 2000
Prof. Dr. Saeed Akhter also noted that:
18 preventive and specialty clinics have been established
500+ robotic surgeries have been completed
A significant increase in transplant volume
Extensive cancer surgeries and advanced interventional radiology procedures
In just six to seven years, PKLI has achieved milestones that often take institutions decades to reach.
As stated during the symposium, this is only the beginning of the journey — with continued commitment to excellence, research, education, and advanced patient care.
